I’m always cautious—and curious—when it comes to gluten-free beer. I used to love regular Peroni Nastro Azzurro beer when I travelled to Italy. So when I saw Peroni Nastro Azzurro Gluten-Free in Italy I knew I had to investigate. It’s a big name, after all, and the label says it’s certified gluten-free by the AIC (Italian Celiac Association). On paper, it looks like a safe bet. But after trying it twice and having two bad reactions, I’m here to share why I do not consider it safe for people with celiac disease, despite the certification.
Peroni Gluten-Free (or Peroni Senza Glutine) is made by the same folks behind the traditional Peroni lager. According to the company, the beer is brewed using barley malt—just like regular beer—but undergoes a special “de-glutenization” process to remove the gluten content at the end of the brewing process. After this process, each batch is tested to ensure the test results meet the legal standard of less than 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten, which qualifies it for certification by the Italian Coeliac Association in Italy and compliance with EU standards.
In simpler terms, it’s a “gluten-removed” beer, not a naturally gluten-free one. This is an important distinction for people with celiac disease.
As someone who is incredibly sensitive to gluten, I never recommend gluten-reduced or gluten-removed beers. If you have celiac disease you cannot consume these types of beers because it is not gluten-free, but instead very low gluten.
Are you travelling to Rome? Check out my FAVORITE gluten-free restaurants in Rome.
You can find Gluten-Free Peroni all over Rome including at Mama Eat, Pizza in Trevi, La Soffita, and numerous other AIC-recommended restaurants! If you’re gluten-free by choice then enjoy having Gluten-Free Peroni at any of these places.
I love travelling to Rome because it is so accessible for those with celiac disease. It’s so nice to not have to think about finding safe restaurants. Travelling to Italy really helps my celiac-anxiety. I’ve been to other cities in Italy where I had no issues finding celiac safe food including – Florence, Assisi, Milan, and Pompeii!
Why I Don’t Recommend Gluten-Free Peroni (Even If It’s Certified)
Despite the AIC certification and low ppm lab results, my body told a different story. I gave Gluten-Free Peroni two chances—both in social settings where I was otherwise eating safely—and I got sick both times. The reactions were unmistakably celiac-related: nausea, brain fog, and that all-too-familiar gut pain that knocks me out for the rest of the night.
I’ve since learned I’m not alone. Many people with celiac disease report reacting to gluten-removed beers, including Peroni and other similar products like Omission or Estrella Damm Daura. The issue is that the current testing methods may not detect all toxic fragments of gluten, especially those that have been hydrolyzed or broken down during processing. So while the beer might technically test below 20 ppm gluten, it doesn’t mean it’s truly safe for every celiac.
Certified Doesn’t Always Mean Safe
The AIC certification gives a false sense of security for many people. And while the AIC does important advocacy and awareness work in Italy, I believe their standards for gluten-removed products are not strict enough for those of us who are highly sensitive.
If a product is made with barley malt, no amount of enzyme treatment can guarantee that the final result is fully safe for celiacs—especially when we’re dealing with autoimmune responses, not just mild sensitivities.
There are other gluten-free beers in Italy that are safe.
My Bottom Line
If you have celiac disease or you’re on a strict gluten-free diet, I do not recommend drinking Peroni Nastro Azzurro Gluten Free. No matter how tempting it is to enjoy an “authentic Italian beer” with your pasta, it’s not worth the risk. I’ve learned the hard way (twice!) that even certified products aren’t always safe—and when it comes to celiac, your body’s response matters more than a label.
Stick with truly gluten-free beers—the ones brewed from gluten-free grains like rice, sorghum, millet, or buckwheat. Your gut will thank you, and you can enjoy your drink with real peace of mind.
And if you just have a gluten intolerance and you don’t have a high gluten sensitivity, you can give it a shot, but make sure you are aware that it does have gluten-containing ingredients and you try it with others who you trust in case you have a reaction. It does taste like a normal Peroni!
If you have celiac disease, you can check out my full post on the best gluten free beer in the United States. Fortunately, in recent years, we now have more and more options of gluten free brands! All of these beers are made with no gluten-containing ingredients and have 0 ppm of gluten! My favourite gluten-free beer and the best option for celiacs is Holidaily Brewing out in Colorado – they are a 100% gluten-free brewery!

3-minute walk from the Uffizi Gallery Sgrano is the highest-rated gluten-free restaurant in Florence! It is the perfect lunch spot that has a variety of sandwiches. Their focaccia is unbelievable! But I’m not a big sandwich eater, so it’s not my favorite restaurant in Florence.
Risotteria Melotti is not my favorite dedicated gluten-free restaurant in Florence, but it certainly has the best risotto you’ll find! But make sure everyone in your party wants risotto – they have no pasta dishes.

Even though Mama Eat is not dedicated gluten-free they are the 2nd safest option! That’s because they have a separate gluten-free kitchen to prevent any cross contamination! Almost their entire menu can be made gluten free. Mama Eat does an incredible job of providing to gluten-free diners
Also known as Trattoria Da Garibardi, this restaurant is another great gluten-free friendly option for dinner. They have a number of gluten-free options including pasta dishes, fresh bread with bruschetta, and gluten-free desserts.
Arguably the 2nd best gluten-free pizza in Florence with a number of gluten-free desserts as well. Their pizza crust will be one of the best you will ever have!
This restaurant is not the highest-rated gluten-free restaurant in Florence, but it was one of my favorites! I enjoyed the best steak of my life while sitting outside directly at the Duomo! Nothing says “Florence” more than a Florentine steak while enjoying the incredible beauty of the Renaissance.

Pandalì 3- minute walk from the Pantheon Simple, no-fuss dedicated gluten-free bakery near the Pantheon
This is one of the few dedicated gluten-free and lactose-free establishments in Rome. This bakery sells pastries and is only open until 3 pm so it’s not an option for dinner. If you need lactose-free options this will be a great choice for you!
El Maiz (Venezuelan Food) 4-minute walk from the Vatican Museum This quick-service restaurant is perfect if you’re tired of pasta and want a light lunch after visiting the Vatican Museum!
Sit Down Restaurant (Great for Dinner)
Risotteria Melotti 3-minute walk from Piazza Navona This family-run restaurant is home to risotto. If you’re not a fan of risotto this is not the restaurant for you for that’s all they serve!
New Food Experience 16-minute walk behind Castle St. Angello This upscale restaurant is a little out of the way of central Rome, but according to the reviews, it is well worth it – especially the gluten-free bread!
Ramè Sushi Naturale Italiano 53-minute walk to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere This sushi restaurant is a bit out of the way, south of Trastevere. But if you’re craving sushi it may be worth the cab ride!

Mama-Eat
Mama-Eat is not 100% Gluten-Free, however, because they have a separate kitchen that is dedicated gluten-free I wanted to include it in the list! I’m so excited to return to Florence, Italy in August 2024. Florence is a city that took me by COMPLETE surprise and became one of my favorite cities in the world. That’s why I wrote “Where to stay in Florence Italy” so you can visit this incredible city as well!
Before I traveled to Florence, I didn’t know much about it other than it was home to the Renaissance. Fortunately, as soon as I arrived I did two INCREDIBLE tours. These tours provided great knowledge of Florence’s rich history, the Medici, and the great Renaissance painters who called it home.

What to See in Florence, Italy
Ten popular tourist sites in Florence are the Florence Cathedral (Duomo) with its iconic dome. The Uffizi Gallery features works by Renaissance masters as well as the Accademia Gallery which houses Michelangelo’s David. The historic Ponte Vecchio bridge, the ornate Palazzo Pitti, and the serene Boboli Gardens. The bustling Piazza della Signoria with the Palazzo Vecchio, the Basilica of Santa Croce known for its famous tombs, the picturesque Piazzale Michelangelo offering panoramic city views, and the elegant Piazza di Santa Maria Novella.
I always recommend booking tours when traveling to fully grasp the richness of the city and the sights you visit. When I was in Florence, I did two incredible tours in Florence that I highly recommend – especially for the price!
I did this $3 walking tour which gave me all the background information I needed in only two hours! This tour has to be the most valuable tour I’ve done in the world.
We walked through the historic center of the city including the Piazza Della Signoria, the Basilica di San Lorenzo, and the Piazza Del Duomo.
I also loved this Airbnb Experiences tour of the Uffizi Museum by Marco. I enjoyed his tour so much that I was going to book his private tour for our 2024 trip! Unfortunately, Marco will be traveling then so I will not be able to enjoy his tour again!
Where to Stay in Florence, Italy
If you’re traveling to Florence here are the best places to consider booking as recommended by myself and other travelers! I know everyone has different budgets while traveling so I will give you a low, mid, and luxury budget option.
These three different hotels offer something for everyone! All three have a great location that will be within walking distance of some of the main sights in Florence. They also have some of the best views of Florence while fitting different budgets. I have no doubt that one of these will meet your travel style!
Usually, when I travel solo, I like to travel low to mid-budget. However, I LOVED the luxury hotel I booked when I traveled solo in 2022. I loved it so much that my husband and I will be staying there again during our upcoming 2024 trip.
It is the best option if you’re planning your Honeymoon in Florence! I met so many American couples on their Honeymoon at its incredible rooftop bar. All 3 of them were there because it was their travel agent’s top choice in Florence!
If you’re visiting Florence, I do recommend traveling off of the high season which is May-August. The crowds can be overwhelming and the heat unbearable. Unfortunately, as a teacher, it is the only time I can travel! But I promise you’ll still love Florence even during the craziness of the summer.
If you’re looking for the perfect budget option for your trip to Florence that will be the Hotel Rita Major! This option is perfect for travelers who want a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while still being close to the city center!
Hotel Rita Major is a 2-star hotel and has a rating of “9.2 Wonderful” on Expedia. Many Expedia reviews remark on the friendliness of staff, the great value of the hotel, and the clean rooms.
Hotel Rita Major is about an 11-minute drive (30-minute walk) from the main train station, a 16-minute walk from the Gallery of the Academy of Florence (home of the David), and an 18-minute walk from the Duomo.
Budget hotels in the heart of the city are hard to come by, but Hotel Rita Major is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a budget hotel that is still near the city centre.
Where to Stay in Florence, Italy: Mid-Budget Option
Courtesy of The Social Hub Florence Lavagnini via Expedia
The Social Hub Florence Lavagnini is a fantastic place to stay for travelers seeking a blend of comfort, community, and culture. You will get to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of the city from their incredible rooftop, outdoor pool.
The Social Hub is a 4-star hotel with a 4.3 rating on Google and a “9.0 Wonderful” recommendation on Expedia by other travelers!
You’ll be about a 13-minute walk from the train station, a 13-minute walk from the Gallery of the Academy of Florence (home of the David), and an 18-minute walk from the Duomo.
The Social Hub has amenities such as a rooftop terrace offering stunning city views, co-working spaces, and a variety of dining options, it caters to both leisure and business travelers. The lively atmosphere and frequent events make it easy to meet fellow travelers and immerse oneself in the local culture, ensuring a memorable stay in Florence. First-time visitors to Florence will love this option!
Mid-budget travelers can’t pass up this incredible view!
This hotel is one of my favorite hotels in the world and easily is one of the best hotels in all of Florence! Hotel degli Orafi is a 4-star hotel located directly on the Arno River, steps away from the famous Ponte Vecchio.
This was one of the first luxury hotels I’ve stayed at and I was amazed. The service was incredibly friendly, I felt very valued as a customer, and the large rooms were pristine. But the number one reason I will be returning is the view from the rooftop bar and it’s central location.
Hotel degli Orafi has an unmatched location in the heart of Florence! It is a short walk (3 minutes) from the lobby to the Palazzo Vecchio where the incredible Uffizi Gallery is located. It is a 15-minute walk to the Gallery of the Academy in Florence and a 12-minute walk to the Piazza Santa Maria Novella.
My stay included their lovely breakfast buffet spread. But if you do not book a room that includes the breakfast buffet I will say it’s not worth the extra cost of $20 a person. You can get a lovely cornetto and cappuccino for about $3-5 nearby at the many restaurants and bakeries.

How to Find Safe Gluten-Free Food in Rome
There are two great resources for knowing where to find safe gluten-free food in Rome. One is the app Find Me Gluten Free and the other is the app AIC – Mobile.
Find Me Gluten Free
Find Me Gluten Free is the gluten-free equivalent of Yelp and can be used while traveling all around the world. Users can create an account and rate the gluten-free options and safety of restaurants they’ve eaten at. All you have to do is search the town you are traveling to and all the gluten-free food options in that town will pop up!
AIC – Mobile
AIC – Mobile is unique to Italy. It is operated by Italy’s Italian Celiac Association (AIC) which is supported by the Italian Government. Any restaurant that displays the AIC logo has been trained on the proper handling of gluten-free food.
AIC-Mobile is their app that allows you to find AIC certified restaurants near you.

If you are gluten-free and getting ready to travel to Rome this post is for you! I’m going to share with you The 5 Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in Rome!
If you didn’t know, Rome is one of the most gluten-free friendly places in the world to travel to – especially if you are celiac! Many kitchens in Rome are prepared to accommodate celiac guests with separate areas to prepare gluten-free food.
Why is Rome (and all of Italy) so gluten-free and celiac friendly?
Italy is home to the Italian Celiac Association (AIC) which is supported by the Italian Government. The AIC has been working for over 30 years on raising awareness, helping create laws, and training restaurants on the significance of celiac disease.

AIC endorses restaurants after they have completed and passed their training requirements. Their endorsement shows that a restaurant is committed to quality gluten-free offerings.
Any restaurant in Italy displaying the AIC logo has been properly trained and endorsed by the AIC to be celiac-safe!
Now let’s get into my favorite gluten-free friendly restaurants in Rome!
Not all of these restaurants are 100%, dedicated gluten-free. However, they are all certified by the AIC to be celiac-safe!
#1 Best Gluten-Free Restaurant: Mama Eat
Mama Eat is probably my favorite restaurant in the world. I’m not kidding! I go out of my way to travel to a Mama Eat location when I’m in Italy, haha.
Mama Eat is probably my favorite restaurant in the world. I’m not kidding! I go out of my way to travel to a Mama Eat location when I’m in Italy, haha.
Mama Eat is NOT dedicated gluten-free. However, they have a completely separate gluten-free kitchen! So if you have celiac disease, this is the perfect stop for you because you don’t have to worry about cross contamination. Mama Eat locations are the best places for those with coeliac disease because of their separate kitchen!
Mama Eat has a 2nd dedicated gluten-free kitchen in all their restaurants.
Having two completely separate kitchens makes it so much easier for gluten-free diners to enjoy Mama Eat’s incredible pasta dishes. Their food is truly delicious. I had the best pasta Bolognese of my life at Mama Eat in Trastevere!
There are two different locations:
Mama Eat near Vatican City
Mama Eat Trastevere
When I was there in the summer of 2022 the menus were slightly different at the two different locations. For example, only the Trastevere location had Gluten-Free Bolognese.
It is well worth visiting both locations while you are in Rome!

#2 Pizza in Trevi
Pizza in Trevi comes off as a tourist trap. That’s because it is. But it is a delicious and totally celiac-safe tourist trap!
Pizza in Trevi is located a few steps away from the Trevi Fountain, a 10-minute walk from the Pantheon, and a 5-minute walk from the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola.
Its location makes Pizza in Trevi the best spot to stop at for lunch during a long day of site seeing!
Pizza in Trevi is also not dedicated gluten-free, but their Celiac Protocol impressed me the most out of every restaurant I have been to in Italy.
When you sit down immediately tell the host or waiter that you are celiac. They will bring you
A brand new placemat with the AIC logo on it
Brand new utensils (only used for those who are gluten-free)
Brand new cup (only used for those who are gluten-free)
Pizza in Trevi – Celiac Safe
I was completely blown away by the care and precaution they take! Their food wasn’t as good as Mama Eat, but it is PERFECT for lunch on a long, hot day. They have a very impressive gluten-free menu with plenty of different gluten-free meals on there. But I highly recommend their pizza – it’s my favorite!
Unfortunately, because it is in such a touristy area, the prices are higher than most restaurants.
However, I still paid significantly less at Pizza in Trevi than I do at an Italian restaurant in the U.S.
Both the pizza and Cacio e’ Pepe are above average. I highly recommend both as well as the gluten-free beer I had (pictured below)!

#3 Le Altre Farine Del Mulino(100% Gluten Free)
This place falls somewhere between a restaurant and a cafe. It is a great place to grab a quick bite before your morning or when you need a break in the middle of the day with a great view.
The best part? Le Altre Farine Del Mulino is 100% gluten-free!
Every pastry, dessert, pizza, sandwich is gluten-free and they are all incredible! You can enjoy this gluten-free bakery, which offers a wide variety of gluten-free bread and gluten-free pastries. They also have ice cream (or gelato as it is known in Italy) and gluten-free cones! If you follow a gluten-free diet it is worth going a little out of the way to enjoy this great spot!
I was fortunate that the Airbnb I always stay at in Rome is around the corner from here!
You will also have an incredible view of St. Peter’s Basilica.

#4 La Soffitta Renovatio
La Soffitta Renovatio is not dedicated gluten-free, but it is another great gluten-free friendly gem located near Vatican City that is certified by the Italian Coeliac Association.
They are AIC certified and takes gluten-free precautions incredibly seriously! All gluten-free food comes with a little flag marked “gluten-free” to let you know it is safe! The best thing to order at La Soffitta is any of their pasta dishes because they are all homemade! This really set them apart from the other restaurants where I had gluten-free pasta.
La Soffitta Renovatio even makes their own Homemade Gluten-Free Pasta!
They even have an entire dessert case filled with gluten-free dessert options you can choose from!

#5 Voglia di Pizza – Gluten free
Voglia di Pizza, a haven for pizza enthusiasts, serves up a delectable array of gluten-free options without compromising on taste.
Nestled in the heart of Rome, right next to Campo di Fiori and only a 7 minute walk from Piazza Navona! It’s location makes Voglia di Pizza a great place to stop for dinner after a long day exploring Rome!
This charming pizzeria caters to diverse palates while ensuring a safe and delicious experience for those who are gluten-free.
