If you’re living with celiac disease or following a gluten-free lifestyle, you already know that hidden gluten can show up in unexpected places. Cocktails are one of them. While tequila itself is naturally gluten-free, many people wonder: is margarita mix gluten-free?

The short answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the ingredients used in the mix.

I absolutely love a good margarita! In this guide, we’ll break down which of the leading brands of margarita mixes are safe, what ingredients to watch for, and how to make a guaranteed gluten-free margarita at home, whether you have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.

Is Margarita Mix Gluten Free?

Most traditional margarita mixes found in stores contain ingredients such as:

  • Lime juice
  • Water
  • Sugar or simple syrup
  • Citrus flavorings

These ingredients are naturally gluten-free, which means many margarita mixes are safe. However, some mixes may contain additives, flavorings, artificial ingredients, artificial sweeteners, or stabilizers that could introduce gluten or be processed in facilities with gluten.

Because of this, not every margarita mix is automatically safe for people with celiac disease.

Personally, I try to avoid all processed drinks and foods or anything without natural ingredients. However, the good thing about store-bought margarita mixes is that they are required to list all of their ingredients and allergies in their product details and nutritional information. Ingredients That Could Contain Gluten

When checking a margarita mix label, watch for these potential red flags:

  • Malt or Malt Flavoring
  • “Natural Flavors”
  • Artificial Coloring or Additives
  • Cross-Contamination

Malt is derived from barley, which contains gluten. It occasionally appears in flavored cocktail mixers.
While most natural flavors are gluten-free, the term is vague. Rarely, stabilizers or flavor carriers may be derived from gluten-containing grains. Some mixers are produced in facilities that also process wheat-based ingredients.

If you’re highly sensitive to gluten or have celiac disease, look for mixes labeled gluten-free. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a brand yet that is “Certified Gluten-Free,” but all the brands I have listed below are labeled Gluten-Free.

I list out the top-rated gluten-free margarita mixes below! But always be sure to read the product information yourself when you buy it. It may be labeled as gluten-free in March of 2026 when I’m writing this, but that doesn’t mean a company won’t change its formula in the future. Always be sure to check the label that you are purchasing says “Gluten-Free” and check the website of the company before consuming.

Is Tequila Gluten Free?

Good news: Plain Tequila is naturally gluten-free.

Tequila is distilled from the blue agave plant, not grains. According to celiac experts, distilled spirits are considered gluten-free even if they originate from gluten grains because the distillation process removes gluten proteins

For margaritas, choose:

  • 100% agave tequila
  • Avoid flavored tequilas unless labeled gluten-free

My go-to tequila is Patron Silver! Their website even states that their tequila is 100% gluten-free.

Popular Margarita Mix Brands That Are Gluten Free

Many widely available margarita mixes do not contain gluten ingredients. Some commonly considered gluten-free options include:

However, ingredient formulations can change, so always check the label before purchasing. If the label says “Gluten-Free,” you can enjoy those delicious mixes worry-free.

My personal favorite gluten-free margarita mix is Stonewall Kitchen Margarita Mixer. It has a deliciously sweet taste but is not as high in sugar as other mixes. Its natural flavor makes it the perfect drink – whether you want to make a frozen margarita or even as a great mocktail option! You’ll enjoy this low-calorie margarita mix.

I always recommend looking for margarita mixes that have actual agave nectar rather than artificial sweeteners or sugar-free fruit syrups – they can leave you with a wicked hangover!

How to Make a Gluten-Free Margarita at Home

The safest margarita is one you make yourself. Homemade margaritas use simple ingredients and eliminate the risk of hidden gluten. Here’s a quick and easy recipe to make the perfect skinny margarita at home with a homemade, natural margarita mix!

Simple Gluten-Free Margarita Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila (100% agave) (my favorite liquor for margaritas is Casamigos or Patron Silver)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz triple sec or orange liqueur
  • ½ oz agave syrup (optional)
  • Ice
  • Salt for the rim
  • Fresh limes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a cocktail glass and dip in salt.
  2. Add tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and agave to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  3. Shake well for about 15 seconds.
  4. Strain into a glass over fresh ice.
  5. Garnish with a real lime wedge, and adding fresh lime juice in as well. (Avoid using lime juice concentrate for the best flavor!)

This recipe is naturally gluten-free, much fresher than bottled mix, and is the perfect blend of citrus and tart flavor.

Tips for Ordering a Gluten-Free Margarita at Restaurants

If you’re ordering a margarita while traveling or dining out, a few precautions can help keep you safe.

  • Ask if they use fresh lime juice or a bottled mix
  • Confirm the tequila brand
  • Avoid pre-made pitchers that may contain unknown mixers
  • Ask the bartender to make it from scratch if possible
  • Ask for no salt or sugar on the rim

Many restaurants now accommodate gluten-free guests, but it’s always best to ask. Authentic Mexican restaurants that use all-natural fruit and mixes are a cocktail favorite of mine; I don’t trust places like Applebees where they use super-processed mixes. If you have gluten sensitivity but not celiac, you don’t have to be as cautious. But if you have celiac disease there is always a risk when ordering a cocktail at a bar.

The Bottom Line

So, is margarita mix gluten-free?

  • Many margarita mixes are gluten-free, but not all.
  • Always check labels for malt, flavorings, or cross-contamination warnings.
  • Tequila itself is naturally gluten-free when made from 100% agave.
  • The safest option is making your margarita at home with fresh lime juice and simple ingredients.

For anyone living with celiac disease, a little label reading goes a long way. You’ll feel good knowing that you can still enjoy a perfect margarita and even custom margarita flavor with some preparation.

With the right mix—or a homemade recipe—you can confidently enjoy a refreshing margarita without worrying about gluten and enjoy a stellar taco Tuesday with the savory flavor of the classic marg!
